Michigan issues eleven adult-use license types: Class A/B/C and Excess Growers (100 to 2,000+ plants), Processor, Retailer, Microbusiness, Class A Microbusiness, Secure Transporter, Safety Compliance Facility, and Designated Consumption Establishment. Fees range from $1,000 to $24,000, and each type carries a distinct real estate profile from small flex space to heavy-power industrial.
Grower tiers by plant count
Class A growers run 100 plants and typically fit small flex or warehouse bays. Class B runs 500 plants across 10,000–25,000 square feet. Class C runs 2,000 plants and needs 25,000–100,000 square feet of heavy-power industrial space. An Excess Grower license stacks additional 2,000-plant blocks on top of an existing Class C, usually across a multi-building campus.
Ancillary licenses have different real estate needs entirely
Every applicant also pays a $3,000 nonrefundable prequalification fee before any facility application, and the host municipality may charge up to $5,000 per year per licensed location. Processors need C1D1 or C1D2 classified extraction space. Retailers need green-zoned storefronts in the 1,500–4,000 square foot range. Secure Transporters need a secured yard and vault. Safety Compliance Facilities need lab-classified space. None of these track plant count, so fee alone is a poor proxy for the real estate a license requires.
