Provisioning Center

Under Michigan's Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act, "provisioning center" is the formal medical-market retail license class — the medical-market equivalent of an adult-use retailer license under MRTMA. Many Michigan retail operations hold both licenses ("co-located" or "dual" licenses) to serve both medical patients and adult-use customers from the same storefront, since a substantial share of Michigan cannabis sales flow through dual-licensed locations.

Site requirements mirror the adult-use retailer class in most practical respects — municipal opt-in for the medical program specifically, buffer distance compliance, and CRA facility approval — but a municipality's opt-in decisions for medical versus adult-use are legally separate, so a site should be checked against both statutes rather than assuming medical opt-in follows adult-use opt-in or vice versa.

For real estate diligence, retail cannabis buildings generally need a secured, limited-access sales floor, a compliant point-of-sale/verification area, and vault or secure storage for inventory — build-out considerations that carry over regardless of whether the license is a provisioning center, a retailer, or a dual-licensed location.
