Retailer (Adult-Use)

The retailer license is MRTMA's adult-use retail sales license and, alongside grower and processor licenses, one of the highest-volume license types the CRA issues. It requires the host municipality to have opted in specifically for retailers (opt-in decisions can differ by license type within the same municipality), compliance with the statutory school buffer (1,000 feet, parcel line to parcel line, unless locally reduced), and CRA facility approval covering security, storage, and point-of-sale compliance.

A retailer license and a medical provisioning center license are legally distinct even though they're commonly operated from the same physical location — dual-licensed storefronts hold both licenses and serve both medical and adult-use customers, but each license has its own municipal opt-in requirement, application, and renewal.

The CRA also enforces a rule that two separate licensees cannot hold active licenses at the same physical address, which matters directly for real estate: a buyer or tenant proposing to add a license at a location that already has an active license under a different company needs to structure the transaction (often as an acquisition of the existing license-holding entity, or a formal license relocation/surrender) rather than simply applying for a second license at that address.
