The answer
C1D1 (Class I, Division 1) is a hazardous-location electrical classification required where flammable solvent vapors are present continuously during normal operation, such as open-loop hydrocarbon extraction. It requires classification-rated ventilation, gas detection and an emergency power-off system, and is a code condition, not a room label — retrofitting it into an unsuited building is expensive.

C1D1 vs C1D2
C1D2 applies where flammable vapors are present only under abnormal conditions, such as a leak or equipment failure, rather than continuously — a lower-risk classification that some closed-loop processing setups can qualify for. Which classification a given process needs is an engineering determination, not a business preference, and it should be settled before the building is under contract.

Solvent storage above threshold quantities triggers secondary containment and separated storage requirements independent of the room's electrical classification. Establish the solvent inventory the operation actually needs before evaluating whether a specific building can support it.
